A social problem is a condition or event that certain members of society find unacceptable or refuse to accept in order to operate in society. Conditions that should not be allowed to continue because they are regarded to be problems for society, necessitating society to react and find solutions to them.
For example drug abuse, rape, alcoholism, corruption, child abuse and so on ….

When we look at drug misuse, rape, drunkenness, corruption, and other social issues, we see that these are all societal issues that require action on the part of society. For example, drug addiction is a major problem in our society, and as a result, a rising number of young boys and girls are becoming hooked to it, which has a significant impact on today's society.

  6. A social problem is a condition or a type of behaviour that many people believe is harmful, some conditions clearly hurt people, such as lacking enough money to buy basic food, shelter, and clothing;being unable to find a job;or suffering from the effects of a polluted environment. However, the extent to which any of these or other conditions or behaviours becomes social problems is based not only on the reality of their existence but on the level of public concern.
Poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunity, racism, and malnutrition are some examples of social problems

    Social problems have two components:
1.Objective element: it is the reality of the conditions of poverty;the reality of insufficient access to food, health services and education and hight rates of infants mortality, preventable diseases and illiteracy.
2.The subjective element: It is the level of public concern about a condition or behavior recognized as a social problems.

Development of social problem:The process in the development of social problem begins when someone (a claims maker)makes an argument (a claim)that a condition or behavior is harmful and tries to convince others why something must be done about it and what specific actions are needed.

  7. Social Problems refers to any condition or behavior occurs in a particular area or go up of people having a negative consequences in a whole society. It is usually a result of social disorganization that leads to social problems.
According to Fuller and Myers, a social problem is "a condition which is defined by a considerable number of persons as a deviation from some social norms which they cherish".

A particular problem actually takes up the structure of a social problem when it involves a large number of people, groups or institutions who all consider that particular condition in a society as effective and intolerable and have been seeking for a solution, wanting to solve it in a collective mode of action. Thus a problem becomes social problem when it is communicated to others and then the activity of one person leads to similar activity of the others.

Some of the social problems were not considered as a social problem like; sexual violence, being a problem it was ignored by legal policymakers and received a very little attention. But when the contemporary women's movement began in the late 1970's it was soon to be focussed as a serious crime and as manifestations of women's inequality. Then it had it's part in public consciousness receiving attention and thus this behaviour turn into a social problem.

Social Problem exist even in the early period when people were not so developed and educated but comparing it with earlier, the social problems seems to be increasingly more in a numerous way in this modern era. People are really responsible for what they're facing because When Social Problem was planting it's root people are neglecting it considering it a minor one. And now, with the increase in population the problems are also increasing in a vast extend that it became difficult to be resolved though there is a solution.

  8. According to Oxford Dictionary,” Social Problem” Is usually taken to refer to social conditions that disrupt or damage society- crime, racism etc. This approach sometimes called constructionist- defines social problem in terms of a process, rather than a type of condition.
According to Ram Ahuja's social problems in India it mainly discusses social issues that prevail in India, like comes violence, tribal unrest, globalization and consumerism and agricultural distress, ageing, elder abused and farmers suicides etc. It also talks about the data on problems such as terrorism, poverty, communal violence, violence against women.
Sociologist have been studying Social problems since the industrial revolution, industrial Revolution bought about massive social change. To the general notice, there is no single agreed upon definition of what Constitute a social problem.
Social problems represent conditions that should not be allowed to continue became they are perceived to be problems for society, requiring society to react on them and fine remedies. Where private troubles are matters for the individuals involved to resolve, public issues or social problems demand a public response.
Different private troubles become defined as social problems in particular societies and in specific periods through a complex process of social construction . ‘ social construction’ define as active process of definition and redefinition in which some issues are widely understood to be social problems, while others are not.
Today, poverty is considered a major problem by the majority of people around the world including the poor themselves. Thus mental disorder, Alcoholism, family disorganization have been recently termed as social problems
In concluding, what social problems becomes a social problem in society cant come up with the exact answer. But there are different problems, public perspective that causes a problem and disruption in the society. Something which is not smoothly functioning or obstacle in the human cylclic living styles.

  9. A social issue is a problem that affects many people within a society. It is a group of common problems in present-day society and ones that many people strive to solve. It is often the consequence of factors extending beyond an individual's control. The concept of social problem was first developed by sociologists. Fuller and Myers in 1941. They defined it as ‘those conditions or situations which members of the society regard as a threat to their values’. Elucidating their ideas, they said at other place that it is ‘a condition which is defined by a considerable number of persons as a deviation from some social norms which they cherish’.Social problems are not static but change with the change in time and space. Changes in law and mores change the concept of social problem.
Recognizing an undesirable condition and defining it as a social problem are two different things. There can be disagreement if some people believe some condition or situation as undesirable but also think it unavoidable because it is a part of the human condition or the price we pay for ‘progress’ as we see in the case of environment imbalance caused by cutting of trees for constructing roads, dislodging people for constructing dams and canals, air and noise pollution due to increasing motor vehicles, rising rate of accidental deaths involving automobiles, etc.
In reality, it requires a belief in equality in order to define discrimination as a problem. There are people who still do not believe that poverty is a social problem. They regard it as unavoidable fate of the masses. Poor people are to blame for their own condition of poverty. Such people define poverty as the personal failure of those who are poor, not a consequence of the arrangement of social structure.

A problem becomes social when it is communicated to others and the activity of one person leads to similar activity of other persons . Thus, a social problem is different from an individual problem. Individual problem is one which is feet by only one person or a small group of people .

Some of the social problems that exist within society are -
    1. Poverty and homelessness : poverty and homelessness are worldwide problems. According to habitat for humanity one quarter of the world's population loves in condition that harm their health and safety. Many do not have shelter, a basic human need for survival.

  11. The term social problems is a generic term applied to a range of conditions and behaviors which are assumed to be manifestations of social disorganization and this conditions warrant changing through some means of social engineering. Social problems are matters that directly or indirectly affect almost all members of the society.
The Social problem that becomes a problem in society are as follows:-
    1. The Politics is mostly applied to the behavior common within governments however politics has been observed in many other group interactions such as academic, corporate and religious institutions. Politics can be termed a social problem because most of the decisions made by governments and other institutions may not necessarily favor the poor in society. Powerful leaders are known to use politics to satisfy their selfish interests through misappropriation of public funds which in turn slows down development processes as seen in many third world countries.
    2. Pollution is also the adding contaminants into the environment. These contaminants are known to cause disorder, instability, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem. Pollution can be as a result of chemical substances or energy, such as heat, light or noise. Pollutants, which are the elements of pollution, can be naturally occurring or as a result of foreign substances or energies. Pollution is a major social problem everywhere because of the presence of human economic activities such as industrial activity and day to day activities. Industrial activity is the main source of pollution contributing to over 70% of world’s water and land pollution. There is however a certain degree of pollution that is accepted as normal industrial practice.
    3. Climate change can be a social problem in that it is known to be caused by human activities such as pollution which in turn affects the weather patterns of different regions. Global warming is a good example of climate change that is caused by human activities over the years. Changing climate patterns affect economic activities such as farming which in turn may cause poverty to communities dependent on farming as an economic activity.
    4. Poverty refers to the lack of basic human needs, such as nutrition, clean water, clothing and shelter, health care and education because of the lack of the finances to afford them. There are two types of poverty namely absolute poverty and relative poverty. Relative poverty is the condition of having relatively fewer resources or less income than others within in a similar society or compared to the worldwide averages. Absolute poverty on the other hand refers to having no resources at all. Poverty is a social problem because it reduces the economic growth due to low levels of production. Today, steady and continuous economic development has been constrained by the lack of economic freedom for many individuals due to linked problems such as corruption, political instability and unemployment.
The above social problems affect every society/country in the world. For members of a society to enjoy quality life, the above problems have to be dealt with seriously. Global warming threatens to reverse major human progress achieved over the years, causing poverty reduction efforts unachievable. Industrialized countries have to lead the switch from use of fossil fuel based energy to clean energy. Political solutions are also required for meaningful and long term policies that will fight for all.

  13. A social issue is a problem that affects many people within a society. It is a group of common problems in present day society and ones that many people strive to solve. It is a often the consequence of factors extending beyond an individual's control. Social issues are the source of a conflicting opinion on the grounds of what are perceived as morally correct or incorrect personal life or interpersonal social life decision. Social issues are distinguished from economic issues; however some issues ( such as immigration) have both social and economic aspects. There are also issues that do not fall into either category such as warfare.

There can be disagreements about what social issues are worth solving, or which should take precedence. Different individuals and different societies have different perception. There are a variety of methods people use to combat social issues. Some people vote for leaders in a democracy to advance their ideals. Outside the political process, people donate or share their time, money, energy, or other resources. This often takes the form of volunteering. Nonprofit organization are often formed for the sole purpose of solving a social issue. Community organizing involves gathering people together for a common people.

  15. What is a social problem that becomes a problem in the society ?

A social problem is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed. This definition has both an objective component and a subjective component.

A social problem emerges when a social entity (such as a social change group, the news media, or influential politicians) begins to call attention to a condition or behavior that it perceives to be undesirable and in need of remedy. As part of this process, it tries to influence public perceptions of the problem, the reasons for it, and possible solutions to it. Because the social entity is making claims about all these matters, this aspect of Stage 1 is termed the claims-making process. Not all efforts to turn a condition or behavior into a social problem succeed, and if they do not succeed, a social problem does not emerge. Because of the resources they have or do not have, some social entities are more likely than others to succeed at this stage. A few ordinary individuals have little influence in the public sphere, but masses of individuals who engage in protest or other political activity have greater ability to help a social problem emerge. Because politicians have the ear of the news media and other types of influence, their views about social problems are often very influential. Most studies of this stage of a social problem focus on the efforts of social change groups and the larger social movement to which they may belong, as most social problems begin with bottom-up efforts from such groups.

  19. A social problem is any deviant behaviour in a disapproved direction of such a degree that exceeds the tolerance limit of the community.
The social problems that causes a problem in a society are as follows÷
-Rapid population growth ÷ Rapid population growth is the most important problem which causes in the society. It leads to the umemployment and poverty. Many people were unable to find a work which leads to frustration due to unemployment, problems like burglary, loot, murder, theft started to arise in the society. It also led them to poverty where they lacks of food , health services and many others .
    - Urbanization ÷ Urbanization creates enourmous social, economic and environmental changes, which provides an opportunity for sustainability with the potential to use resources more efficiently. It is the cause of social problems. It is believed that living in a city can provide opportunities, diversity, and market place competition. As against this there may be stress , increase cause of living and negative social aspects that tesult from a mass.
    - Lack of education ÷ People without good education are at risk from a lifetime of poor diet, long manual working and worsening mental health.Lack of education can have serious effects on children and adults and can affect health, living conditions and social situations. Due to lack of education, people donot take care of themselves because they are less educated about topics such as family planning and proper hygiene.
    - Gender and caste discrimination ÷ Our society is highly influenced by gender discrimination. Most of the domestic decisions are finalised by the males. Most of the time discrimination may not be visible on the surface. The bride needs to give a dowry while getting married ,the bride's education, carrer and wealth are completely disregarded as she is not given equal societal status to a man.The expectation of dowry can be justified through the influence of greed, and if the demands are not met, either the marriage is called off or the bride experiences dowry related violence.
Lots of people are also victimized in the name of caste. This happens because people have been dicided as touchables and untouchables. This aort of discrimination occurs because the so called higher caste does not regard equality to the lower caste. They are not aware that every one is born equal.Lack of education, unwillingness to change, lack of unconsciousness are at the core of such discrimination.
    - Lack of guidance of younsters ÷ Many of the younger generation fall easily to bad habits. In the absence of proper guidance and counselling they are involved is various anti social behaviour like stealing, robbery, murder kidnapping etc.Younger generation requires explicit attention. Today ,millions of children are addicted to drugs school dropouts, delinquency, attempt suicide, suffer from anxiety and depression. In spite of rising in literacy rates, the trend opting the wrong decision or confusing is continously increasing in children because of the lack of guidance services.
The role in studying social problems is to create an awareness about these problems in the society, analyse the causes of social problems and discuss with the individuals, group and society and examine the consequences of alternate plans suggested for solving social problems.

The term refers to how our world is a social creation, originating and evolving through but everyday thoughts and actions. Most of the time,we assume and act as though the world is a given, objectively predetermined outside our existence. Name: Somalika Tripura. Roll no. : 279
