Statistics is a familiar word now-a-days. It has two different meanings. In the plural sense, the word implies a set of numerical figures, usually obtained by measurement or counting. These are also collectively known as data. In the singular sense, ‘Statistics’ refers to the subject of scientific activity which deals with the theories and methods of collection, analysis and interpretation of such data. In sociology, like in other fields of science, it is necessary to deal with some simple and some more complex statistical procedures.

Use of Statistics in Sociology

Therefore, sociologists seek the help of statistical tools to study cultural change in the society, family patterns, prostitution, crime, marriage system, etc. They also study statistically the relation between prostitution and poverty, crime and poverty, drunkenness and crime, illiteracy and crime, etc. Thus, statistics is of immense use in various sociological studies.
